Bollywood has had a cold reception so far in 2015. After one of its poorest first quarters in years, the Hindi film industry faces its toughest test this summer. Much to the anxiety of distributors and exhibitors, the Khan triumvirate-Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir (who doesn't even have a release in 2015)-is missing in action. And so are the formulaic action entertainers which are safe but staid bets to deliver at the box office. Instead, this season features stars of the younger generation taking risks.
Speaking their hearts out is something the Mehra family struggles with in Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do. Much like her popular last film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Akhtar takes her characters on a beautiful voyage-this time around the locations are Turkey and Greece-but then forces them to face life's tough questions. With Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar joining the Mehras on the cruise, the film is the starriest entry of the summer pickings.

Few can deny that Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan are two of the most talented actors currently working in the industry. But both have been low on luck at the box office lately. While Kapoor returns after almost two years with his first leading role as the street fighter Johnny Balraj in Bombay Velvet, Balan looks to overcome tepid showing of Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Bobby Jasoos to play the part of a wife stuck in an unhappy marriage in the Mahesh Bhatt-scripted Hamari Adhuri Kahani releasing on June 12. It was after watching Aashiqui 2 that Balan insisted on working with Mohit Suri, currently the Rohit Shetty of romantic musical dramas. Balan took her request to Mahesh Bhatt and asked him to intervene. He did so by spending a year to write a story for Suri to direct and Balan to act. For Suri, who is looking for his third successive hit after Aashiqui 2 (2013) and Ek Villain (2014), the film marks a return to his seven-film long partnering with Emraan Hashmi. "We started our careers together," says Suri, who was 22 when he directed Hashmi in Zeher (2005).
Heart also drives Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor), the protagonist of Kashyap's Rs 80-crore film, his biggest budget film to date. Expectations are sky-high from Kashyap, who along with Gyan Prakash, author of Mumbai Fables, S. Thanikachalam and Vasan Bala, has co-written the film which recreates Bombay of the 1960s in Sri Lanka. Also starring in the film is Anushka Sharma as Rosie, a jazz singer. The film marks the acting debut of filmmaker Karan Johar who, from what we have heard, is a scene-stealer as a villain.
Inspired by the true story of the feat of India's Got Talent winners Suresh and Vernon Group, which became the first Indian group to make it to the finals of the World Hip Hop Championship in Las Vegas in 2012, the film stars Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor. "There was everything in their story-emotion, comedy and overall entertainment," says Remo D'Souza, who roped in Suresh and Vernon to help him with the choreography as he did with ABCD. "I couldn't have made it without them." 2ff7e9595c
